It is hard to imagine that this country needs to have a “debate” about Climate Change/Global Warming. A recent CNN-ORD poll shows 49% of Americans believe Climate Change is real AND it is man made. 49%!

The right and the pro oil groups have been extraordinarily successful at spreading propaganda that introduces doubt. This doubt is not based on science, but is based on greed and selfishness. It is greed that is funding the propaganda. The oil barons are rightfully concerned that a move away from oil is a threat to the massive profits being reaped through the destruction of our environment. It is selfishness that allows people to pretend there is any real science that introduces doubt that climate change is real, it is man made, and it is potentially disastrous for mankind.

When it comes to peer reviewed scientific studies, it is very close to unanimous that man’s activities are drastically altering the climate. The vast majority agree that this altered climate is going to result in huge changes in agriculture, water availability, sea levels, and man’s ability to thrive as we do today.

It is not too late to make changes in our industry and personal lives to slow and even reverse the pace of change. But the longer we go on “debating” whether or not it is real, the less our ability is to make changes that won’t drastically alter our lifestyles.

I applaud President Obama for making it an issue again. Now if only we can just get the other 51% of the nation to wake up!
