What Do They Mean By Elitist?
I’ve always been frustrated and puzzled by the right wing extremists when they accuse people like President Obama of being an elitist. They’re talking about a guy that grew up without much, worked hard, got a great education, and then succeeded wildly at everything he did.
Granted, this group loves to label people. You’re a socialist! You’re anti-American! You’re a Fascist! So I understand that a big part of what they are doing is just trying to attach a label to their political enemies in the hopes that it sticks and brings them down.
But after reading this article in Talking Points Memo, it finally hit me what the right means when they call someone an elitist. What they are trying to say, in the most negative and hurtful way, is that you’re a rational thinker. You’re not so far out there that you have no sense of reality.
That said, it is apparent that there are at least some rational folks left in the party of Abraham Lincoln and Dwight D. Eisenhower. But there aren’t many. And the ranks appear to be thinning.
