Guns in Schools

As if we all didn’t already realize the idiocy of putting armed guards in our schools, here is an interesting article that talks about a study by three experts on school violence and criminal justice. The study found – and this should come as no shock – that our schools are incredibly safe. The study found that armed guns in our schools are likely to create more problems than the idea solves.
It is very hard for me not to be cynical about the NRA proposal. I find it more of a marketing campaign to try to spread even more weapons into an already overarmed American public. I believe that what the NRA is most interested in is creating “false problems” that plant seeds of fear into many American’s heads. And, or course, the whole idea behind generating the fear is to help the NRA’s corporate backers sell more weapons to more Americans. Profiting from death and violence is nothing new in America. But that doesn’t make it right!
It would seem that it would make much more sense to focus on mental health, studying how to keep guns out of the hands of “bad guys,” and making a serious effort to restrict the guns available to those that have legitimate use for such purposes as hunting and self defense.
