We finally have a new Surgeon General! Thanks to a rather bizarre attempt by Senator Cruz to stop President Obama from using his executive powers to help fix our immigration problem, Dr. Murthy’s nomination was finally put to a vote. And he cleared.
This represents a win for the American people. The NRA wanted to stop his nomination because Dr. Murthy believes that over 32,000 gun deaths a year indicates that we have a health problem. He thinks we should study the problem and find ways to reduce the number of deaths. Of course the NRA thinks the only problem is that are not enough gun deaths. They want more. They want to see more weapons flowing more freely so that the gun industry can ring up bigger profits. Bigger profits from the blood of American citizens.
However, most of us recognize that when you’ve got 32,000 deaths a year from something, the prudent thing to do is to study it, learn from it, and find ways to fix it. The auto industry has done just that. And they’ve done it successfully. The airline industry has done that and airline travel is now incredibly safe. We’ve done it with toys, clothes, furniture, food, and just about anything else that when not handled properly, caused death or injury. All those things are safer now. Because we learned from the tragic deaths and injuries and the industry was required to improve their products. Toys are safer. Clothes and furniture are less likely to easily catch fire. Food is less likely to be tainted with deadly bacteria.
Congratulations to Dr. Murthy and congratulations to the citizens of the United States who now may finally have a chance to be in less danger from an out of control NRA and gun industry.
