When History Looks Back – If We’re Still Worrying About History
1April 2, 2015 by Chris Kite
Years from now, when history looks back at the United States of America and the science denying GOP that refused to take action to stem global climate change, the fossil fuel industry pandering right wing anti-science nuts will certainly be left taking a big chunk of the blame for the state of the world.
Of course in the United States, if the GOP is still in power and gets its way, it will strike those references from history books because they don’t meet with the right’s idealistic view of a perfect America that only does good. No doubt the history books will tell us about how the great Ronald Reagan did his best to stem global warming, but Barack Obama screwed it up by pushing fossil fuels and refusing to back alternative energy.
We won’t hear about how Reagan claimed trees cause more pollution than automobiles do. We won’t hear how today’s Republicans brought snow balls to the halls of congress as their proof that global warming doesn’t exist. We won’t hear about how Republicans continuously claimed not to be scientists while saying global warming seemed pretty far fetched to them. We won’t hear comparisons of Ted Cruz ignoring science to Galileo’s embracing science and proving science deniers wrong.
American exceptionalism indeed!

This is SO important. We could perhaps quit worrying about issues that aren’t hurting anyone, hint, hint Indiana, and focus in on stuff that hugely impacts our lives and the future for our children. What we’re leaving them is indefensible if we make no effort to improve it. History will reflect our concerns as well — do you want your grandchildren to remember you for denying equal rights to gays, lesbians, women, people of color and ethnicities that aren’t lily white or for trying to save the planet? It really is quite that simple.
