The Insanity of Conservatives Fearing Sharia Law!1
April 15, 2015 by Chris Kite
It’s a pretty well known fact that US Law is based on the Constitution of the United States of America and nothing else. You can argue all day about how the courts have interpreted the Constitution, but those interpretations are still based on the Constitution. There are lots of things both sides disagree with, but at the end of the day, the rulings on those issues are based on a court’s interpretation of the Constitution and how it applies to various laws and regulations.
And yet Idaho seems willing to risk losing funding for the federal system that processes child support payments and tracks down scofflaws all because some whacked out lunatics have decided that this would make the state of Idaho subject to Sharia law.
If you think about their paranoia and their approach to today’s issues however, you can start to understand why they are so paranoid. The same people that want to use “religious freedom” and their personal interpretation of the bible to discriminate (last century it was used to try to justify discrimination against blacks, today it is being used to discriminate against gay people) don’t think religious law should be used when this law is non-Christian. So let me get this straight. Basing laws on Christian beliefs is perfectly acceptable but basing laws on Islamic beliefs is not? Right! Anyone else see a problem with this?
So here is a radical idea. Separation of Church and State. You are free to follow your religion as long as it complies with the laws and regulations of this country. The laws and regulations that are based on the US Constitution. Not the bible. Not Sharia law. Not Mormon law. It seems pretty simple to me.
Absolutely–particularly to dyed-in-the-wool Christians who want to use state religious freedom restoration legislation, ala Indiana and 20 other states, to allow them the “religious freedom” to deny gays and, who knows, African-Americans, and anyone the religion of Jesus sees fit to not meet the qualifications of Love One Another.
You’re right, it is insane and we should be ashamed.
