Racists Aren’t Born. They Are Created!

Racism is repulsive. It is destructive. Racism is wrong.

Here is one of many stories about students that created a racist song and then had to publicly apologize for it. The school apparently had no authority to take further action and the idealistic side of me hopes that maybe a lesson was learned.

But everyone can learn a lesson from one simple sentence in this story:

“As kids, we hear racist jokes all times of the day.”

Here’s the thing. If adults don’t spout their hateful racist ideals in front of children, the cycle can be broken. Because kids aren’t naturally racist. If they grow up thinking everyone is equal, that is the way they will treat people.

Racism is still alive and thriving in the US and all over the world. But the acceptance of racism has rapidly diminished and I honestly believe that a good percentage of people that have racist views also know these views are wrong. So they have the power to keep those views to themselves. And they have the power to speak up when they see or hear something racist.
