By now the arguments by the pro-gun crowd are stale and tired. So let’s look at each one and what a good response is:

Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People
Perfect. You just made an argument why guns are fine but people should not be allowed to have them.

But If You Outlaw Guns, Only Criminals Will Have Guns
True. If you outlaw ANYTHING, only criminals will still do that. Robbery? Rape? Murder? Grand Theft Auto? Assault? Speeding? You get the point.

Even If You Outlaw Guns, There Will Still Be Shootings
Yep. Same is true with anything. But if drunk driving weren’t illegal and strongly enforced, do you really think drunk driving deaths would have been cut in half since 1980?

Regulating Guns Will Put Us On A Slippery Slope
See, If You Outlaw Guns, Only Criminals Will Have Guns. Are you really going to argue that ANY law will put us on a slippery slope? Because if it is true for guns, it is true for anything.

But Britain And Australia Outlawed Guns and They Have High Gun Murder Rates
Wrong! Gun murders in the UK have been steadily declining since 2000. Australia gun homicides dropped 59% between 1995 and 2006 and gun suicides dropped 65%.

What We Need To Do Is Start Enforcing Existing Gun Laws
Like the law that felons can’t buy guns? But they can today because they can walk into a gun show in many states, plunk down cash, and walk out with a gun. Or several of them. How do you enforce the laws if the laws aren’t uniform and consistent.

Look At Chicago! They Have Strict Gun Laws And Are The Murder Capital of America
While it is true that Chicago has more murders than any other city, there are several things that need to be considered. First, Chicago has the third biggest population in the country. So all this is really saying is Chicago has more gun murders than New York or Los Angeles. If you look at gun murders per capita, Chicago isn’t even in the top ten. You also have to look at where crime guns came from. More than 50% came from out of state. Which makes a good argument why we need NATIONAL gun control.

The Only Way To Stop A Bad Guy With A Gun Is A Good Guy With A Gun
Columbine. Virginia Tech. Fort Hood. Tucson. Reagan Assassination Attempt. “Good Guys With Guns” were present at all these events. So much for THAT argument.

First Hitler Came For Guns
Wrong. Hitler loosened gun laws. Prior to Hitler, guns were not very strictly regulated. In 1938 Hitler deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles, shotguns, and ammunition.

The Constitution Allowed Guns So We Could Overthrow A Tyrannical Government
Okay, first let’s discount the absurdity of the actual ability to overthrow the government and let’s just consider the notion that is what the Constitution meant. Who determines that? Timothy McVeigh? The Unabomber? Scott Roeder (the guy that killed Dr George Tiller, aka, The Abortion Doctor)?

Then lets consider what kinds of guns you can buy. And you’re going to use those against the US Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines? They have grenades. And mortars. And fully automatic weapons. And drones. And tanks. And planes that can drop smart bombs. And nuclear weapons. You’re going to overthrow the government with your AR-15? Sounds like a good argument that you’re not sane enough to own a gun to me!
