A Better Focus For Constitutional Amendments

June 12, 2015 by Chris Kite

No real surprise in this statement, but Wisconsin Governor and GOP Presidential hopeful said he would support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

He goes on to talk about it being a “state’s right.” If you know your history, you’ll know that is also what conservatives said about civil rights, blacks voting, segregation, and the brutal lynchings that were common in the south.

If we’re going to do some good with constitutional amendments, I have a suggestion for two places where we could do more good than harm, and where we would not be enabling discrimination.

The first constitutional amendment we should focus on is one that changes the “Citizens United” ruling by SCOTUS. Let’s take unlimited money out of elections and help cut down on the rampant corruption that is creating this huge wealth and power gap.

The other constitutional amendment we should focus on is clarifying the right to bear arms. Let’s make it clear that in order to own or purchase a gun you must be registered, you must undergo a background check with every purchase, you must undergo training, and you must follow specific gun safety rules. If you do not, your permit would be withdrawn and you could no longer own a gun.
