Jeb Bush And The Scarlet Letter
1June 13, 2015 by Chris Kite
Where do Republicans come up with these brilliant ideas? Are they really that unaware of the fact that sex is a powerful intoxicant and that for as long as man has roamed the earth, it often proves too great a temptation to resist?
So what Jeb Bush is suggesting, I suppose, is that we should have unwed mothers have a big scarlet U tatooed on their foreheads.
People generally don’t have unprotected sex thinking about unplanned pregnancy. That’s the whole point! I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that fear of being shamed is way down the list of what unwed people are thinking of when they engage in sex. But it is possible that they believe in the many myths that are out there about not getting pregnant the first time, not getting pregnant standing up, the pull it out quick method, etc.
Maybe instead of publicly shaming unwed mothers, we should focus on early and frequent sex education (that includes the basics as well as prevention of pregnancy and STDs) so that people DO think about pregnancy before engaging in sex. And then they think about how to prevent pregnancy.
After all . . . if we’re going to publicly shame people, aren’t we going to have to explain how they got pregnant in the first place?
