This is the best article I’ve read about the Iran Nuclear Deal. It makes a very good point. Many on the right seem to think that the US, as the world’s only superpower, can simply tell others how to behave and they will do as we say. This is not true. It never was and never will be. Before such a global village of a planet, it was easier to convince other countries (either through carrot or stick), but there has always been give and take. It wasn’t just a matter of telling countries what to do.
Cuba? North Vietnam? China? USSR? Iran?
We tried for over 50 years to force our will on Cuba but nothing changed.
We tried to force our will on North Vietnam and went to war. We lost. Vietnam became a communist country. They are now our “friend” and a trading partner. They are still largely communist.
Nixon visited China and opened dialog with them because we couldn’t simply force our will on them. They are still communist. And they took a huge percentage of our manufacturing jobs from us!
Reagan negotiated nuclear arms reductions with the USSR because he couldn’t simply force our will on them. We outspent them in building our military and eventually drove them to the poor house.
Reagan sold weapons to Iran to try to get hostages released. He couldn’t simply force our will on them.
