The Terrorism The Right Refuses To Recognize

There have been 351 mass shootings in the US in 334 days. The right is willing to do all kinds of things to take away their own rights in the name of protecting us from “Muslim Terrorists.” But they don’t even discuss the more than daily terrorism almost completely perpetrated by US citizens throughout our country.

Well, that isn’t true. They will discuss it. Because a good portion of these shootings are gang related, the right discusses it in the context of “black on black” crime. Like that makes it okay. Or not horrific. It is nothing but deflection, and a racist deflection at that.

We have mass shootings at this rate for a number of reasons. Number one on the list is the easy availability and preponderance of guns. Our huge income inequality is another. A broken criminal justice system also plays into it. As does the very difficult prospect of actually changing your social economic status.

The right is generally perfectly willing to accept throwing someone into a jail cell with no charges, no lawyer, and no trial or hearing if that person might just be a terrorist. I guess there is no possibility they ever get the wrong person.

The right is generally willing to accept torture of those same people or of war prisoners if there is, in their minds, the possibility we might get valuable information from them that stops a terrorist attack. I guess there is no possibility they could torture the wrong person or that the person being tortured might give up false information just to make them stop.

The right seems very willing to allow the government to gather phone information, save calls, and look at electronic communications if there is the slightest chance they might somehow randomly come across something that prevents a terrorist attack.

The right (and pretty much all of America) seems just fine with having their body x-rayed just in case they might be trying to carry something dangerous onto a plane.

But the right is unwilling to consider any action to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. They just throw up talking points like you can’t stop criminals from getting guns. Or if you make guns illegal, only criminals will have guns. Or the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Or don’t punish “responsible” gun owners for the actions of criminals. But it is okay to punish people in the name of preventing Islamic Terrorism.

I just don’t get it. I know it is largely due to the constant selling of fear of Islamic Terrorism and chalking up the constant gun violence in our country as “black on black” violence. Because, I guess, it is perfectly acceptable that blacks kill blacks and there is nothing those of us that are white can do about it. At least that appears to be their thought process.

But statistically, Americans are far more likely to be victims of a random mass shooting at a mall, school, restaurant, or other public place than they are to be the victims of Islamic Terrorism. And yet all their focus is on Islamic Terrorists.

I just don’t get it.
