Donald Trump is our 21st Century George Wallace
1January 13, 2016 by Chris Kite
Donald Trump. Racist. Blowhard. Bombastic know nothing. And in many ways, much like George Wallace.
His message is one of hate and intolerance. He has fired up the racist crowds and is making racism safe again. We’ve always known racism was there. But for several decades it was simply unacceptable to be open about it. It you did, it was at a minimum a political death sentence, and often resulted in being shunned in the community.
The Republican party has been headed down this path for a number of years. It was in evidence as far back as Reagan talking about “welfare” queens and with the “Willie Horton” ad that George HW Bush ran against Michael Dukakis. They’ve encouraged a kind of discreet, dog whistle type racism. Don’t come right out and say it, but use words that make it clear where our problems are. They’ve attacked minorities, gay/lesbian/transexual people, atheists, and Muslims.
But Trump has taken it to a whole new level. He has brought it out in the open and made it clear that he welcomes the support of other racists, and Islamophobes. There is a constant string of examples, the latest of which was when a Muslim woman sat in silent protest at a Trump rally and was verbally assaulted and removed from the rally.
And then Donald Trump had the nerve to talk about Muslim’s hatred.
As Americans, we need to stand up against this type of hatred and bigotry.
