Donald Trump and other right wing Islamophobes often talk about Syrian refuges in very scary terms. They paint a picture of an army of young strapping fanatical jihadists faking their refuge status in order to gain entrance into the US. In the January 14 GOP Debate, Trump said, “When I look at the migration, I looked at the line … where are the women? It looked like very few women. Very few children. . . . Strong, powerful men, young and people are looking at that and they’re saying what’s going on?”

But that simply isn’t true. Statistical data show that 67% of the refugees seeking to resettle in the United States are women and children under the age of 12. Roughly 25% are men over 18.

Is accepting refugees completely risk free? Of course not. Nothing is risk free. Driving. Showering. Flying. Eating. Walking.

But the risk it very low and accepting refugees is the right thing to do. It is the HUMAN thing to do. It is the compassionate thing to do. And, I think most would agree, it is the Christian thing to do. These GOP candidates all love to talk about how Christian they are. But they sure don’t show it in their actions or policy proposals.

Terrorism is rare and infrequent in the United States and in most of the world. Despite the horrific scenes broadcast by news networks, you’re far more likely to die in an auto accident than in an attack by an Islamic Jihadists. And even more likely to die from heart disease, stroke, cancer, or just about any other cause.
