Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has an idea. He wants the state of Illinois to take over Chicago Public Schools. While I doubt anyone would argue CPS doesn’t have huge problems, I’m not sure Bruce Rauner is the answer. I’m sure he’s got all kinds of ideas to improve things. And I’m guessing that pretty much all of them involve destroying the union. Because Bruce Rauner never met a union that wasn’t worth destroying.
But I find the idea of a state takeover of CPS a frightening prospect. Not just because the State of Illinois is a huge mess on its own. In fairness, Rauner inherited a mess. But he has made it worse, not better. His only interest seems to be weakening unions.
All one has to do is look at the nearby state of Michigan and how fellow right wing extremist governor Rick Snyder appointed someone to straighten out the finances of the distressed city of Flint, only to actually cost the state more money and expose Flint’s residents to water tainted with lead and other harmful substances.
No thank you, Governor Rauner. We don’t need that kind of help! There are other ways to fix things outside of destroying unions.
