Welfare Recipient Drug Testing
1March 7, 2016 by Chris Kite
A number of conservative states have recently implemented drug testing to qualify for “welfare” benefits. This feeds the false right wing Republican stereotype that welfare recipients are lazy and drug addicts. Despite the fact that every state that has implemented it has found that the percentage of people that test positive is microscopic, more states continue to do it.
North Carolina recently released their results. They are not surprising. They are consistent with other states. Less than 0.3% of those screened tested positive.
Conservatives must be disappointed because this disproves their characterization of welfare recipients as drug addicted people that offer nothing to society. They must be disappointed because the tests show exactly what those that opposed the tests said they would show. Those on welfare are no more likely to be on drugs than those that aren’t.
These tests are a waste of money. They are a waste of manpower. They are a slap in the face to people that are already often humiliated on a daily basis by cruel conservative stereotypes that are far from true.
Isn’t it funny how conservatives are all for small government, freedom, and efficient spending until they have an opportunity to waste money for the purpose of intruding on the lives of those they don’t approve of?
A government so small it can slip though key-holes and inside a woman’s vagina…
