In an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Bernie Sanders was asked if he would vote for Hillary Clinton and he said yes. He clearly recognizes what a disaster Donald Trump would be for this country. And while that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, it really is all the reason any Bernie Sanders supporters should need to switch their support to Hillary Clinton.
The big question in my mind is, will the Super Bernie fans follow? You would think that after singing his praises for months and months, they would recognize that when it comes to who to vote for in the 2016 Presidential Election, Bernie Sanders might have thought this thing through.
But the truth is, there are many Bernie Sanders supporters that are the left equivalent of the Tea Party. There is a certain ignorance that has crept into the left and right extremes of the party that is downright frightening.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m very liberal. But I have long recognized that my views don’t really mesh with the “average” American voter. I’ve mentioned it before, but I have an internal guidance system that tells me any Presidential candidate that I find myself almost entirely in agreement with (such as Bernie Sanders) is probably too liberal for the country. And by that, I mean that they probably aren’t electable.
But back to voting for Hillary Clinton. I’m very comfortable doing it. Given a choice between Trump and Clinton, it is really a no brainer. But there is a pretty significant crowd that somehow thinks “burning down the country” is preferable to voting for Hillary Clinton.
I get why people dislike her. She is a political machine that seems to blow with the wind. She is an opportunist and has not done a very good job of managing this or her last Presidential campaign. She doesn’t deserve all the negative criticism, and the people on the left that have latched on to all the fake right wing “scandals” are very misinformed.
I’m not at all a fan of these people that seem to be saying, give me a far left politician or I’m going to not vote, write in Bernie Sanders, or vote libertarian. It’s ignorant. But it’s not much different from the tea party lunatic fringe. They’ve spent so much time in the Sandernista internet echo chamber that they’ve convinced themselves up is down and down is up.
If you’re really a libertarian and you agree with Gary Johnson’s policy ideas, by all means vote for him. And if you’re a racist that is afraid of your own shadow, go ahead and vote for Trump.
But if you really believe in liberal values, I think you’re far better off with Hillary Clinton than with Trump. And let’s be honest. We are a two party system. It is going to be Trump or Clinton. A third party candidate hasn’t ever won the Presidential election and it isn’t going to happen this year either.
