The GOP has always had an obsession with the American flag. I sometimes wonder if they think that somehow, by flying bigger and more flags than other people makes them more American? You know, kind of like walking around with their assault rifles slung over their shoulder or their side arm strapped to their side.
And they’ve always spent just a little too much time focused on what others do with the flag. Is Obama not wearing a flag pin? Shouldn’t we be putting people in prison that burn the flag? Shouldn’t everyone be decked out in flag apparel on any traditional US patriotic holiday?
So it should come as no surprise that the right was all upset about the fact that there were no American flags at the Democratic National Convention. I guess by their logic, a failure to have American flags at the convention would somehow prove that Republicans are true Americans while Democrats are not. I question that logic when the guy that is at the head of their party loves Russia and Vladimir Putin more than he does the US. But it doesn’t really matter because as is usually the case with the right, they failed to actually check the facts. There were plenty of American flags at the Democratic National Convention, as this fact check from Snopes points out.
Then of course, there was the outrage that the next Vice President, Tim Kaine, was wearing a Honduran flag but not an American flag. Only thing is, the North Carolina GOP was wrong. I guess they are so unpatriotic, and so uncaring about our troops that they aren’t familiar with the Blue Star Pin worn by people with family members in military service.
So, while maybe they think that they are showing they love their country more by flying lots of flags and wearing lots of flag apparel, they might want to slow down a little on the accusations and shaming. Because they are usually wrong!
