In his address to Congress, Republican President Donald Trump used the old and tired talking point that immigrants cost taxpayers billions of dollars a year. What he said was, “According to the National Academy of Sciences, our current immigration system costs America’s taxpayers many billions of dollars a year.”

But that is a lie, or, if you’re feeling charitable, a half truth. Because what the report said was that while first generation immigrants are more expensive, second generation contribute more in taxes per capita than did non-immigrants.
