Republican President Donald Trump recently said, “Finally, NATO countries are starting to pay billions of dollars more since I have made clear that the United States expects all of its allies to pay their fair share.”
He loves to lie and NATO is one of the things at the top of his list of frequent lies. First of all, he keeps implying that countries pay the United States or NATO. They do not. But they do spend their OWN money on their OWN defense. In 2014 NATO members that were not currently spending the 2% required by NATO signed on to an agreement that they would spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense by the year 2024. So what we are seeing is that the agreement kicked in and now countries have started boosting their defense spending.
His Presidency has absolutely nothing to do with NATO member defense spending. He is just lying about things that have nothing to do with him. Which is one of his greatest skills. He does it with jobs, the economy, China’s policies, and everything else that can possibly be construed as positive news.
