Our Broken Justice System And Our Obsession With Deadly Guns

The link to the video attached made me ill. It made me sad. It makes me angry!
The fact that this is a “justified” shooting is so wrong, on so many levels, that it is beyond fathomable.
I’m not a cop. I don’t face danger every day. I also haven’t been trained to deal with the stress involved in a life or death situation. But I don’t feel like this officer was properly trained either. Or perhaps he doesn’t have the right personality.
I’m also going to point out that perhaps if our police officers didn’t have to assume every person was potentially carrying a gun, things might be different. Perhaps if we didn’t have hundreds of millions of guns floating all over the country our police officers might not be so nervous. A telling statistic is that United States police officers killed almost twice as many people in March of 2015 as UK police killed in the entire 20th century.
Something needs to change. Actually several things need to change. We need to toughen up our gun laws so that we have a better handle on who can own a gun. We need to insist upon training for anyone that is allowed to buy a gun. We need to track and go after the source of crime guns (they all start as legal guns). We need to improve the training and testing of our police forces. And we need to hold police accountable for using deadly force.
