A lawsuit was recently won against a “bad apple” gun dealer in Kansas. The gun dealer was accused of knowingly selling a shotgun to Russell Graham, a convicted domestic offender, through a “straw man” purchaser

A straw man gun purchase is where someone that can pass a background check knowingly buys a gun for someone that can’t, and immediately hands the gun off to the party that shouldn’t have the gun. In this case, the gun shop was accused of allowing Russell Graham to pay for the gun while his grandmother “purchased” the gun under her name.

It won’t bring back the eight year old Zeus Shirley, the son of Elizabeth Shirley. And it won’t undo what was already done. But maybe it will send a message to gun dealers that they aren’t going to get away with this type of immoral conduct. There is a reason people are not allowed to buy guns. It is completely immoral to sell the gun to them anyway just to make a few dollars in profit.

Sadly, this is only a civil case, so there will be no jail time for the offending owner of the business. But it is financially painful and perhaps being caught will make them conduct themselves in a more lawful manner.
